Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle.
The Cremaster Cycle who was created by Matthew Barney is the first truly great piece of cinema to be made in a fine art context since Dali Bunuel filmed Un Chien Andalou in 1929. It is one of the most imaginative and brillant achievements in the history of avant-garde cinema.
The Cremaster Cycle was begun eight years ago and now that it has been completed it can finally be assessed. Like TS Eliot's poem, this series of films tries to salvage what in myth, ritual and art is still accessible to the modern world. Eliot's modern wasteland was the London of the early 20th century, with its fogs and crowds of commuters on London Bridge and a typist waiting for "the young man carbuncular". Matthew Barney's modern world, however is defined by death metal and Vaseline, and his myths all have their point of origin and their destination in the Cremaster, a muscle that connects the scrotum to the male body.
The Cremaster Cycle should be seen not just as a major American piece of art work but as a real piece of American cinema.
My opinion of the film is that I find it very disturbing, I really do not like the film at all. I dont see why is was created, my opinion is that it has no meaning what so ever. Apparently its got something too do with the birth cycle but thats now how I see it.
The Cremaster Films, were originally shot and presented in a different order, the first Cremaster film was number four which arrived in 1994, then Cremaster one in 1995 and so forth, all the other films are hit-or-miss experiments, but the films are full of images that sear themselves into your minds eye, Barney, with the head or the ram, trawling through a cave made entirely of petroleum (Vaseline) Goodyear blimps arrayed as sexual organs; satyrs and hermaphrodites, amputees and drone bees.

Here is a quote from a individual called James Verniere "The Cremaster Cycle" contains gross-out imagery, nudity, graphic sex and enough pretentiousness to choke a hippo".
