File Types.
Jpegs - Jpeg is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic devices. The term Jpeg is an acronym for the 'Joint Photographic Experts Group'.
Jpeg is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital photography, lossy compression basically means its a data encoding method that compresses data by losing some of it.
Tiff- Tiff stands for 'Tagged image file format' its a file format for storing images, popular among graphic artists, the publishing industry and both amateur and professional photographers in general.
PNG- PNG stands for 'Portable network graphics' PNG is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression.
PNG supports palette based images, greyscale images and full colour non palette based RGB images. PNG was designed for transferring images on the internet, not for the professional quality print graphics and therefore does not support non RGB colour spaces.
Gif- Gif stands for 'Graphics interchange format', Gif is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987.
The format supports up to eight bits per pixel. Gif also supports animations.
RAW- RAW stands for 'raw image format'. Raw files are so named because they are not yet processed and therefore are not ready to be printed or edited with a bitmap graphics editor.
A camera raw image file contains minimally processed date from the image sensor of either a digital camera, image scanner or motion picture film scanner.
BMP- The BMP file format is also known as bitmap image file or device independent bitmap (DIB) file format.
The BMP file format is capable of storing 2D digital images of arbitrary width, height and resolution.
